Sun Bei Ling was a descendant of the great Sun Tzu (of Sun Tzu’s Art of War fame). Sun Bei Ling and Pong Guen grew up together in the Vale of Ghosts, and were both classmates and sworn brothers. Sun Bei Ling followed Pong Guen to the state of Wei, but there he was accused of treason and was punished by “Bin” - the words for “treason” were tattooed on his face, and his kneecaps were surgically removed. Afterward he changed his name to Sun Bin. |

Pong Guen was both a master strategist and a gifted warrior. After leaving the Vale of Ghosts, Pong Guen became High Commander of the state of Wei, whereupon he invited his sworn brother Sun Bei Ling to join him. |

Choy was a servant who helped raise both Pong Guen and Sun Bei Ling while the two were children in the Vale of Ghosts. |

Tian Gei was a general from the state of Qi. After losing to Pong Guen’s army, Tian Gei was sent to Wei to treat for peace. There he met Sun Bin and was impressed by Sun’s wit and knowledge. On his way out of Wei, he smuggled Sun Bin out of the country in a box of tea leaves. |
